James R. Lewis, Professor of Department of Religious Studies, School of Philosophy, Wuhan University, passed away in the United States on October 11, 2022, at the age of 72, from cardiac arrest due to respiratory failure.
James devoted his entire academic career to the study of new religions movements (NRM), publishing a large body of scholarly work that earned him an excellent academic reputation among his peers. He had strong academic convictions and inherited the tenacity of his father's bloodbath at Omaha Beach, and continued to focus on his critique of Fa Lun Gong organization even after many attacks and harassment.
He had a natural affinity for people and maintained a relationship with his students that was both teacher and friend. Every student he taught received sincere academic guidance from him, and he was a beloved teacher.
We extend our sorrowful condolences on the passing of him.
