Analytic Naturalism is an important view in contemporary moral theory. In many ways, the discipline known as “metaethics” was founded on G E Moore’s famous rejection of analytic naturalism through the Open Question Argument. In this lecture, Professor Lutz explores the significance of analytic naturalism to moral theory, shows why the view is widely regarded to be hopeless, and explains how a huge number of difficult issues in ethics could be resolved if analytic naturalism were correct. Professor Finlay then presents his version of analytic naturalism, the “end-relational theory.” He demonstrates how an end-relational theory of value can overcome the challenges that are supposed to be fatal to analytic naturalism, and shows how his end-relational account opens up exciting new directions for moral theory.

This lecture is strongly recommended for all undergraduate and graduate students with any interest in western moral theory.
