CFP:1st Political Philosophy workshop WHU 8-10 August 2019

Wuhan University School of Philosophy is pleased to announce its 1st Political Philosophy workshop, to be held 8-10 August 2019.


Convenors: Paul Patton and Yong Li.


The workshop will consider current debates over the future of democracy from Eastern as well as Western philosophical perspectives. Invited speakers will address the perceived crisis of liberal democracy, criticisms of its forms of representation and the challenges posed by environmental issues; as well as Confucian and Pragmatist approaches to democracy.


Invited speakers:


John Keane (Sydney): The greening of democracy: on the profound long-term effects of green politics on the language and institutions and imaginary of democracy


Nicholas Tampio (Fordham):Hu Shih and philosophical resources for a democratic tradition in China


David Owen (Southampton): The Global Crisis of the Liberal Democratic State: critical reflections on democracy and its forms


Sor Hoon Tan (Singapore Management University): A Pragmatist Response to Confucian challenges to liberal democracy’


Gordon Finlayson (University of Sussex): On the Democratic Deficit of Frankfurt School Critical Theory. Can it still help us understand our world?


Lachlan Umbers (University of Western Australia): Assessing Recent Critiques of Representative Democracy


Elena Zilliotti (Singapore Management University/ Wuhan University): Rethinking Liberal Democracy: the Role of Political Parties


Submissions are invited on these and related topics.  


The deadline for submission is May 15, 2019.


The conference will cover accommodation and meals.
